Woodland D50 Board of Education Meeting, Jan. 23
There was a great turnout at the January BPAC Meeting last week! Thank you to the families who joined us on a chilly January evening to learn more about Food and Nutrition. We also want to express our appreciation to the Woodland teachers and the Warren Township High School student volunteers from AVANZA for the fun activities you planned for the kids in attendance. Local businesses donated food and raffle prizes, community organizations shared resources, and Tobias the Comfort Dog was there for all the fun too. The next meeting will be March 12, and the topic will be Mental Health. https://www.dist50.net/o/dist50/page/bpac

The Wildcats got a jump start on their Winter Break travels. Ms. Sellers’ class participated in a Holidays Around the World activity where students received passports and were assigned a country to explore. They discovered facts about the country’s history, culture, and holiday traditions. After gathering their information, they visited immigration and customs (Ms. Sellers), where they shared what they had learned. Once approved, they received a passport stamp and moved on to the next country, ready to learn more. This exciting, globe-trotting adventure was a fun way to head into Winter Break!

Take a look as Intermediate Students participate in the Hour of Code program in honor of Computer Science in Education Week. The goal of this initiative is to introduce students to the world of computer science through engaging and fun coding activities, with the hope of sparking future interest in coding and the tech field. The first activity had students listening to verbal instructions to see if they could create a picture following the algorithm. Then students selected an activity from a choice board based on how much previous coding experience they had. Thank you to our dedicated Tech Integration Specialists for organizing and bringing this exciting learning opportunity to our students. #LifeintheW

Intermediate Student Leaders were busy crafting and creating today. They worked together to make bracelets and cards for patients at Lurie Children's Hospital. They wrote words of encouragement, told jokes, drew pictures, and made colorful beaded and loom bracelets to bring smiles and happiness to children in the hospital this holiday season. A big thank you to Det. Hansen for connecting Woodland to Lurie Children’s and encouraging our students to be involved and give to others in the community. #LifeintheW

Today we celebrated the end of Native American Heritage Month with amazing presentations and performances by the Iron Bear Singers and Dancers. Did you know Illinois has only 1 federally recognized tribe? Of the 574 American Indian Tribes in the US, Illinois only recognizes the Potawatomi tribe. Today we learned about the language, dance, regalia, history, and the culture of the 10 tribes represented by the Iron Bear Singers. Special thanks to the Trickster Cultural Center helping us provide this experience for our students! Miigwech and bama wpi!

Here are a few pictures of our team of volunteers setting up for the event, including Tobias Comfort Dog! A special thank you to the Warren Township High School students from Students of Service, National Honor Society, and Avanza for helping throughout the night.
