Student Online Personal Protection Act (SOPPA)

SOPPA (105 ILCS 85) education software or database vendors and other entities that operate websites, online learning, mobile applications, student information databases such as student information systems are referred to in SOPPA as operators. SOPPA is intended to ensure student data collected by those vendors or the district are protected and requires those vendors as well as the school district to take a number of actions to protect student data.

Depending upon the type of software or database the district may need to collect different types of student data which is then shared with educational vendors through their online sites, services or applications. Under SOPPA, educational vendors are prohibited from selling or renting students’ information or from engaging in marketing using the student's information.
